Research Analyst, Public Security – Full-Time

Emerging Markets Political Risk Analysis (EMPRA) is seeking a Public Security Research Analyst to cover key developments related to public security in Mexico. Responsibilities will include monitoring and analysis of security policies and strategies, regional crime trends, organized crime dynamics, and the impact of crime and violence on Mexico’s private sector. This Research Analyst will report to EMPRA’s Head of Research and the Senior Politics and Public Security Analyst.

The Public Security Research will play an important role in the day-to-day monitoring of public security developments in Mexico and its impact on the public and private sector.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Identify trends related to security developments in Mexico (and potentially elsewhere in Latin America).
  • Monitor organized crime and state responses.
  • Regularly compile federal crime data for trend monitoring and forecasting.
  • Skillfully synthesize and translate data into narratives, visually informative graphics, and professional presentations.
  • Provide research assistance to the Senior Analysts and the Head of Research for EMRPA publications
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and interviews with high-level decision-makers and on-the-ground actors in fields related to public security.

 

Requirements:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in Political Science, Economics, Public Policy, Latin America Studies, International Relations, or any related field.
  • An outstanding aptitude for research and data collection.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Excellent English Language writing skills.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Excel. Experience using a statistics program (R, Stata, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfort in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Availability to travel regularly.

Only candidates with a background in Mexican/Latin American affairs should apply. Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in regional public security-related matters. Experience in applied statistics is also a plus, as is knowledge of InDesign and/or Photoshop.
