Senior Energy Policy Analyst - Full-Time

Mexico City, Mexico

Emerging Markets Political Risk Analysis (EMPRA) is looking for a Senior Energy Analyst to join our team based in Mexico City. The successful candidates work will primarily entail monitoring, reporting on, and analyzing developments related to the public policy, and regulatory developments in Mexico’s energy sector and other areas.

The successful candidate for this position will have a strong background in economics or public policy. Candidates for this position should have a strong background in energy, politics, trade, and public policy with a particular focus on Mexico. Broader knowledge of these issues in Latin America is highly valued.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research on the legal framework, regulations, and market dynamics of the energy sector, along with research on relevant international developments affecting the Mexican hydrocarbons and electricity sectors.
  • Monitor and report on developments related to Mexico’s energy reform.
  • Write in-depth reports, identifying, assessing and forecasting political risks with an emphasis on the energy sector.
  • Work with the Head of Research to expand coverage of Mexico’s energy sector and determine means of adding value to EMPRA’s research projects.
  • Collect information and statistical data on topics relevant to Mexico’s energy sector (research may expand to other countries in Latin America).
  • Perform statistical analysis and create visual representations of data.
  • Periodically research and report on other areas including trade, economic policy, health policy, infrastructure, etc. as is needed by the firm.
  • Attend conferences and meetings with policy experts and decision-makers.
  • Develop a continuously expanding database of contacts.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, political science or a related field.
  • Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Candidates from other fields must present a solid understanding of economic policy.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a clear line of interest and experience working in or alongside Mexico’s energy sector.
  • Fluency in English, including the ability to draft and edit documents in English (Native-level English is strongly preferred).
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Excellent writing skills and previous research experience are required.
  • Prior experience in consulting or economic journalism is preferred.
  • Proficient in Excel and one or more statistics programs.
  • Experience using applied econometrics is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with economic journalism and legal aspects of the energy sector are a plus.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work requirements and adhere to deadlines is highly valued.

Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills. A high degree of professionalism and discretion is required. Candidates must be highly driven, organized and able to work independently with little guidance.

 

Compensation:

Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
