Public Policy & Data Science - Intern

Emerging Markets Political Risk Analysis (EMPRA) is seeking an intern with a strong background in statistics. The intern will directly participate in the development of EMPRA’s forthcoming index that will be used to measure development related to public security.


  • Assist EMPRA in creating innovative methods to measure public security dynamics in Mexico.
  • Directly contribute to the development of composite indicators.
  • Collect statistical data on a range of policy-related topics.
  • Gather information through research and interviews.
  • Attend conferences and meetings with policy experts and decision-makers.
  • Perform methodologically rigorous statistical analysis.
  • Create visual representations of data.
  • Write daily reports documenting the progress of data collection and modeling.


  • Area of study: Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Public Policy or Political Science, with significant experience in applied statistics or econometrics.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience using statistical software programs (Stata, R, SPSS, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and previous research experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel.
  • The ability to adapt to changing work requirements and adhere to deadlines is highly valued.
  • Candidates must be highly driven, organized and able to work independently.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in Mexican politics and public policy as well as region-specific security issues.
